What matters most to us at Egmont Press is the power of a good story, wherever it appears. . . and stories don’t get much better than Milne and Shepard’s tales of Winnie-the-Pooh.
Last week we launched our Classic Winnie-the-Pooh app for iPad and iPhone. The Bear For All Ages is now available on touch screen devices- in an interactive format that brings the 85 year-old stories to life for a whole new generation of readers.
When we spoke to children and parents when developing the app, it became very clear that today’s children are used to experiencing stories in shorter bursts on their digital devices than the more sedate pace of the original Pooh stories from the 1920s.
This was real food for thought because we wanted to retain the gentle atmosphere of Pooh’s adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood whilst bringing them to modern readers in new ways. We’re working with a story and illustrations that are greatly loved, so we looked at this app very sensitively.
All the interactive elements are subtle and designed to enhance the experience for children, whilst not distracting from the story. For example you can hear the sounds of the Hundred Acre Wood and see those wonderful original illustrations come to life for the first time. And the app also allows children to choose whether to read themselves or have the stories read to them by a narrator.
It’s been a great pleasure and privilege to bring this classic of children’s literature to new readers. We simply fell in love all over again with Shepard’s pen strokes and Milne’s funny and wise stories- and we hope you will too.
